Nia Kurniawan was born in Banyumas, Central Java. He received his Bachelor and Master Degree from University of Brawijaya, Malang. In 2005, He began his career as a lecturer at University of Brawijaya. He got amphibian research methodology training in Bogor Agricultural Institute and The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation, and thereafter he joined the herpetological society of Indonesia. In 2007, A monbugakusho scholarship supported his Doctoral Degree in Institute for Amphibian Biology, Graduate School of Science, Hiroshima University, Japan. He joined the laboratory of Prof. Masayuki Sumida and conducted doctoral research in his group. After finished his doctoral degree in 2010, He went back to University of Brawijaya as a lecturer, where his research program focuses on phylogenetics and evolution of herpetofauna in Sundaland.
